Sulh Presents: The Story of Aurora Mardinganian

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Sulh Ensemble will present the story of the remarkable refugee and genocide survivor, Aurora Mardiganian. After fleeing the Armenian Genocide where most of her family was killed, she came to the United States where she would be exploited by the Hollywood Industry to promote “Auction of Souls,” a silent film based on her autobiography, “Ravished Armenia.” 2019 will be the 100th anniversary of the film.
The Story of Aurora Mardiganian is a multi-media presentation using narration, live interactive video by Camera Lucida, and live music by women composers of Armenia and the Armenian Diaspora, and Armenian folk music. Compositions will range from the canonical hymn, “Zarmanali ē inj,” which was written by poet and hymnographer, Khosrovidukht Goghtnatsi, in the early 8th century; to works by composers from the 20th century.
The Sulh Ensemble, led by Artistic Director Jon Silpayamanant, focuses on presenting Intercultural music and arts performances from the Silk Road, South and Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean. Sulh is based in the New Albany, Indiana and Greater Louisville, Kentucky region. Through concerts, collaborations, and outreach with dancers, composers, and musicians the group is constantly exploring global music genres. Many of the musicians of Sulh are active as teachers, producers, advocates, and practitioners of the arts of many music and dance traditions from around the world.
Camera Lucida is an interactive video and music project which focuses on creative collaborations with dancers, musicians, composers, and movement artists. The group was formed by Roxell Karr and Jon Silpayamanant and is based in New Albany, Indiana.
The event will take place at the Millicent and Norman Stiefler Recital Hall, which is located in the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center. The event is free and accessible and free parking is available in the Dogwood lot directly in front of the Ogle Center and in the Hickory lot directly behind the Ogle Center from one hour prior to the start of the concert until one hour following the conclusion of the concert.
