Sarah Basílio’s Blood of a Poet exists in a rare, prehistorical, nearly alchemical realm of quiet power. One may draw comparisons between Blood of a Poet and the early 70s works of Nico and Brigitte Fontaine. To be sure, there is a shared interest in the use of harmonium and voice to find a new modality, a poetry of the soul, informed by the distant past and that yet to come. However flattering, such comparisons are insufficient. Blood of a Poet is aptly named. The lifeblood, the true potency of the project is the nearly suicidal nature of it. Through the foreboding, swaying tones one finds the artist flayed, broken, and revealed. Basílio provides us a true examination and decimation of self not through intellect but in the world infinite of dreams and spirit. Terra Incognita!
