SUMMARY:Cello Fest
DESCRIPTION:Kate Wakefield may be best known for her work with Cincinnati rock duo Lung\, but anyone who has seen her play solo knows that she’s enthralling and unforgettable whether or not Daisy’s behind her making like a caveman. Her set at Woodbine Chamber a year or so ago is among the most emotionally satisfying sets I’ve seen in recent years–a truly singular voice and vision.Chris Cupp has been on the scene lately playing bass guitar in Grace Rogers’ band. The songs where he switches to cello\, however\, take the music in a whole ‘nother direction. These deep\, cello-driven interludes were what made me want to host Chris at Surface Noise and see what else he might have hidden up his bow-hand sleeve. Chris will be bringing along Wesley Johnson to accompany him on guitar\, and I’m pretty sure he intends to arrange a set of old time tunes for cello and guitar\, something I had not heretofore known even to be possible.Ellen Weis is a veteran performer at Surface Noise\, bringing classical chops to jazz performance and a collaborative energy that knows no bounds\, in terms of genre or otherwise. For her performance at Cello Fest 2026\, Ellen will be joined by guitarist Bob Dixon\, who currently plays with Giant Dunes and who remains a stalwart of the underground and experimental music scenes here in Louisville. I have no idea what Bob and Ellen might cook up together–if they even do themselves!–but I cannot wait to find out on Sunday.Jon Silpayamanant was part of the very first live performance hosted at Surface Noise and has played at the store more than any other musician–well over thirty times in the nearly ten years we’ve been open. While classically trained\, Jon is a fearless improviser with eccentric experimental tendencies. He is also a scholar and practitioner of various folk traditions across the globe\, well beyond his native Thailand and the rest of southeast Asia. It is always to hear Jon play\, in any ensemble or setting\, and to be enriched by his tireless pursuit of new musical knowledge.Again\, Cello Fest goes down on Friday at 7:00 PM and Sunday at 5:00 PM. A $20 donation is suggested for each day of Cello Fest\, but donations are never compulsory.

SUMMARY:Creative Mayhem Summit #18: Musical/Visual Improvised Performance
DESCRIPTION:Creative Mayhem Summit #18: Musical/Visual Improvised Performance\nPainting inspires music inspires painting in the moment. Come enjoy (and participate in) an interdisciplinary improvised collaboration between musicians Misha Feigin\, Jon Silpayamant and visual artists Bart Galloway and Luis De León.\nThis is a very kid friendly event with audience participation possible.\nThere is a $10 suggested donation. Kids get in free. There is some parking at the Studio. Overflow parking can be found across Preston Highway at Aldi.\n———————–\nCreative Mayhem Summits\nMore information about Creative Mayhem Summits and the participants:\nBart Galloway began presenting what would evolve into the Creative Mayhem Summits back in 1996 while teaching studio fine arts at Mississippi State University in Starkville\, MS. In his own paintings and drawings\, he was exploring the relationships between the concepts of Cubism\, Abstract Expressionism\, “Action” Painting and Jazz theory inspired by the music of John Coltrane\, Ornette Coleman’s “Harmolodics”\, European Free Improvised Music among others.\nBart was curious to see if improvising painters could connect emotionally\, intellectually and artistically in the moment with musicians on stage. And would the musicians respond in kind. The answer was an emphatic YES!\nIt was at this time that Bart was fortunate to come under the mentorship of drummer Alvin Fielder\, a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (https://www.aacmchicago.org/). With Alvin’s help\, Bart began to produce interdisciplinary performances with the likes of Edward “Kidd” Jordan\, Joel Futterman\, Davey Williams\, Dave Dove\, Assif Tsahar and Susie Ibarra.\n———————\n\nMisha Feigin\nMisha Feigin was born and raised in Moscow and known as one of Russia’s premier guitarists. He released two albums on the state label Melodiya. Since moving to the U.S. in 1990\, Misha has been featured on National Public Radio and BBC. He has toured throughout North America and Europe releasing twelve CDs in America and Germany\, and two in Great Britain on Leo Records. Misha shared the stage/recorded with Elliot Sharp\, Steve Beresford \, Dave Liebman\, and Eugene Chadbourne\, He performed on many prestigious stages such as Moscow’s Concert Hall Russia\, Washington’s Kennedy Center\, and Vancouver Jazz Festival.Misha Feigin won the Thomas Merton Prize for Poetry in 2000 and was awarded the Al Smith Fellowship for Creative Nonfiction in 2002. His books include a novel Searching for Irina and a book of poetry\, The Last Word in Astronomy\, both by Fleur Publishing. Misha’s\, collections of poetry\, Abraham’s Bagel\, Skippers in Training\, and Cloud Letters\, all by AvidReaders publishing Group. Misha’s latest book is a free style travelogue Tribal Diaries\, a book of lyrical observations. Misha currently lives in Louisville\, Kentucky.\nhttps://mishafeigin2.bandcamp.com/https://mishafeigin.free-jazz.net/\n————————\n\nJon Silpayamanant\nBorn in Udon Thani\, Thailand Jon Silpayamanant is an intercultural multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, cellist\, and music educator based in the greater Louisville and Kentuckiana area.As a biracial Thai American with musical families on both sides of the world\, he has been navigating musical code switching and bimusicality for much of his life and uses that experience to inform his understanding of how music ecosystems interact\, hybridize\, and create systems of exclusion.\nhttps://www.silpayamanant.com/\n————————-\n\nLuis De Léon\nLuis De Léon studied elementary school in Guatemala and Mexico. In high school\, he took some drawing classes\, then moved to Guatemala City to study Communication Sciences at Rafael Landívar University. During this time\, he took drawing classes with an artist collective in Cerrito del Carmen.\nHis drawings reflect his search for his own style. His strokes are influenced by Shel Silverstein\, Martin Prechtel\, and Tim Burton. With his drawings\, Luis aims to offer a moment of reflection and provoke more than a few laughs in the viewer. Luis changed his perspective on the world after starting to draw; he finds shapes in things and carries a camera with him to capture images and turn them into drawings.\nIn addition to playing with Appalatin\, Luis is also a member of Hot Coffee Breakdown\, Yapa\, Tristen Brooke\, Joann Bellanova\, and Nick Teale. Whether he’s waiting for soundchecks or traveling\, he takes advantage of the opportunity to paint and capture those moments.\nhttps://luisdeleonsite.com/https://www.facebook.com/LuisDeLeonArt

SUMMARY:Grady Goods: The Global Cello: Diaspora Voices
DESCRIPTION:The Global Cello: Diaspora Voices\n \nJoin Jon Silpayamanant\, cellist and founder/artistic director of Saw Peep Intercultural Ensemble\, on a musical journey to hear diasporic composers drawing inspiration from stories and music styles and traditions from their ancestral homelands.\n  \nWorks by Ezra Escobar\, Reena Esmail\, May Kouyoumdjian\, Siti binti Saad\, Nathalie Joachim\, Kian Soltani\, and Jon Silpayamanant.\n \nSunday\, March 31\, 3PM Grady Goods 620 Baxter Avenue Louisville\, KY\n \nFacebook Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/725205432750314\n \n\n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\nEzra Escobar – itulak (2020)\n\n\n itulak was conceived as a result of improvisation. I was playing around with my instrument and seeing what I liked. The title means “push” or “impel” in Tagalog. It seems like the piece is constantly trying to get somewhere\, but never really succeeds. The music keeps pushing forwards\, but something is pushing it back. \n\n\nReena Esmail – Varsha वर्षा (2019)\n\n\n Varsha was written for the Haydn Seven Last Words project\, for Juilliard415. The project commissioned seven composers (including Nico Muhly\, Paola Prestini\, Jessica Meyer\, Tania Leon\, Caroline Shaw and Colin Jacobsen) to write interludes between each of the Haydn quartets. \n\n This piece\, Varsha\, serves as an interlude between Sonata V (Sitio – “I Thirst”) and Sonata VI (Consummatum Est – “It is finished”) of Haydn’s Seven Last Words. The combination of Hindustani raags used in this piece are from the Malhaar family\, which are sung to beckon rain. \n\n I imagined an interlude between these two sonatas: Christ thirsts. Rain comes from the distance (Megh Malhaar). There is a downpour around him (Miyan ki Malhaar)\, but he grows slowly weaker. His next words make clear that even the rain is not enough: his thirst is of another sort\, which cannot be quenched by water. And so\, it is finished. \n\n\nMary Kouyoumdjian – The Revolt of the Stars (2018)\n\n\n The Revolt of the Stars is inspired by the Armenian fable by the same name\, in which the stars unite in an attempt to outshine the sun and the moon. The fable questions the effectiveness of ‘strength in numbers’ when a group that lacks strength in spirit rises up against those in positions of power. \n\n Pre-recorded cello part by Caitlyn Sullivan \n\n\nSiti binti Saad – Muhogo Wa Jangombe (1930)\n\n\n A Taarab song titled after a dish\, which literally translates as “beef cassava.” The cassava is a woody shrub with edible roots. The lyrics of the song is filled with metaphors and proverbs that discuss relationships with people while ostensibly talking about how to prepare the dish and etiquette of eating. \n\n\nJon Silpayamanant – Thawarawadi (2023) from Two Thai Tunes for solo cello\n\n\n Thawarawadi\, the first movement of Two Thai Tunes for solo cello\, is an old name for Central Thailand (7th – 11th centuries BCE) and is loosely based on Thai Classical Music forms and style. The string style is reminiscent of the Thai Saw Sam Sai\, which is a type of three-stringed spike fiddle that resembles other Southeast Asian rebabs like those found in Indonesia\, Malaysia\, and the Cambodian Tro Khmer. \n\n Commissioned by the Cello Teaching Repertoire Consortium* \n\n\nNathalie Joachim – Dam Mwen Yo (2016)\n\n\n Dam mwen yo in Haitian Creole simply translates to “they are my ladies.” In Haiti\, the cultural image of women is one of strength. They are pillars of their homes and communities\, and are both fearless and loving\, all while carrying the weight of their families and children on their backs. As a first generation Haitian-American\, these women—my mother\, grandmothers\, sisters\, aunts\, cousins—were central to my upbringing and my understanding of what it means to be a woman. In Dantan\, Haiti-Sud\, where my family is from\, it is rare to walk down the countryside roads without hearing the voices of women—in the fields\, cooking for their loved ones\, gathering water at the wells with their babies. This piece and the voices within it are representative of these ladies—my ladies. And the cello sings their song—one of strength\, beauty\, pain and simplicity in a familiar landscape. \n\n Commissioned by Amanda Gookin for The Forward Music Project. \n\n\nKian Soltani – Persian Fire Dance (2012)\n\n\n Soltani’s “Persian Fire Dance” is influenced by his Persian roots and is filled with asymmetrical meters\, drones\, an improvisatory section\, and percussive effects which mimic the tonbak (a Persian goblet drum). Having a family with traditional Persian musicians in Iran\, these are sounds and styles he grew up hearing in in Bregenz\, Austria where he was born. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nNotes and Links\n * Support for this commission was provided by Summer@Eastman of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester\, and by Cello Teaching Repertoire Consortium\, including: Co-Directors Lisa Caravan\, Daniel Ketter Lead Commissioners Miranora Frisch\, Kathleen Kemp\, Laura Usiskin Co-Commissioners Hannah Collins\, Rosemary Elliott\, Hilary Glen\, Cora Swenson Lee\, James Nackley\, Adriana Ransom\, Jeffrey Solow\, Caleb van der Swaagh\, Benjamin Swartz\, Zachary Sweet\, James Waldo Ezra Escobar – www.ezraescobarcello.com Reena Esmail – www.reenaesmail.com Mary Kouyoumdjian – www.marykouyoumdjian.com Siti Binti Saad – historyheroines.com/2020/02/14/siti-binti-saad Jon Silpayamanant – www.silpayamanant.com Nathalie Joachim – www.nathaliejoachim.com Kian Soltani – www.kiansoltani.com

I was playing around with my instrument and seeing what I liked. The title means “push” or “impel” in Tagalog. It seems like the piece is constantly trying to get somewhere\, but never really succeeds. The music keeps pushing forwards\, but something is pushing it back. \n\n\n\nReena Esmail – Varsha वर्षा (2019)\n\n\n\nVarsha was written for the Haydn Seven Last Words project\, for Juilliard415. The project commissioned seven composers (including Nico Muhly\, Paola Prestini\, Jessica Meyer\, Tania Leon\, Caroline Shaw and Colin Jacobsen) to write interludes between each of the Haydn quartets. \n\n\n\nThis piece\, Varsha\, serves as an interlude between Sonata V (Sitio – “I Thirst”) and Sonata VI (Consummatum Est – “It is finished”) of Haydn’s Seven Last Words. The combination of Hindustani raags used in this piece are from the Malhaar family\, which are sung to beckon rain. \n\n\n\nI imagined an interlude between these two sonatas: Christ thirsts. \n\n\n\nMary Kouyoumdjian – The Revolt of the Stars (2018)\n\n\n\nThe Revolt of the Stars is inspired by the Armenian fable by the same name\, in which the stars unite in an attempt to outshine the sun and the moon. The fable questions the effectiveness of ‘strength in numbers’ when a group that lacks strength in spirit rises up against those in positions of power. \n\n\n\nPre-recorded cello part by Caitlyn Sullivan \n\n\n\nSiti binti Saad – Muhogo Wa Jangombe (1930)\n\n\n\nA Taarab song titled after a dish\, which literally translates as “beef cassava.” The cassava is a woody shrub with edible roots. The lyrics of the song is filled with metaphors and proverbs that discuss relationships with people while ostensibly talking about how to prepare the dish and etiquette of eating. \n\n\n\nJon Silpayamanant – Thawarawadi (2023) from Two Thai Tunes for solo cello\n\n\n\nThawarawadi\, the first movement of Two Thai Tunes for solo cello\, is an old name for Central Thailand (7th – 11th centuries BCE) and is loosely based on Thai Classical Music forms and style. The string style is reminiscent of the Thai Saw Sam Sai\, which is a type of three-stringed spike fiddle that resembles other Southeast Asian rebabs like those found in Indonesia\, Malaysia\, and the Cambodian Tro Khmer. \n\n\n\nCommissioned by the Cello Teaching Repertoire Consortium* \n\n\n\nNathalie Joachim – Dam Mwen Yo (2016)\n\n\n\nDam mwen yo in Haitian Creole simply translates to “they are my ladies.” In Haiti\, the cultural image of women is one of strength. \n\n\n\nCommissioned by Amanda Gookin for The Forward Music Project. \n\n\n\nKian Soltani – Persian Fire Dance (2012)\n\n\n\nSoltani’s “Persian Fire Dance” is influenced by his Persian roots and is filled with asymmetrical meters\, drones\, an improvisatory section\, and percussive effects which mimic the tonbak (a Persian goblet drum). Having a family with traditional Persian musicians in Iran\, these are sounds and styles he grew up hearing in in Bregenz\, Austria where he was born. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNotes and Links\n\n\n\n* Support for this commission was provided by Summer@Eastman of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester\, and by Cello Teaching Repertoire Consortium\, including: \n\n\n\nCo-Directors Lisa Caravan\, Daniel Ketter \n\n\n\nLead Commissioners Miranora Frisch\, Kathleen Kemp\, Laura Usiskin Co-Commissioners Hannah Collins\, Rosemary Elliott\, Hilary Glen\, Cora Swenson Lee\, James Nackley\, Adriana Ransom\, Jeffrey Solow\, Caleb van der Swaagh\, Benjamin Swartz\, Zachary Sweet\, James Waldo \n\n\n\nEzra Escobar – www.ezraescobarcello.com \n\n\n\nReena Esmail – www.reenaesmail.com \n\n\n\nMary Kouyoumdjian – www.marykouyoumdjian.com \n\n\n\nSiti Binti Saad – historyheroines.com/2020/02/14/siti-binti-saad \n\n\n\nJon Silpayamanant – www.silpayamanant.com \n\n\n\nNathalie Joachim – www.nathaliejoachim.com \n\n\n\nKian Soltani – www.kiansoltani.com
