SUMMARY:Grady Goods Gallery: The Jazz Series - Misha Feigin & Jon Silpayamanant
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, January 6th from 6pm-8pm for the opening of The Jazz Series: New Works by Harold Maier and music by Misha Feigin and Jon Silpayamanant!\n\nHarold became a major part of Louisville’s creative DNA in the 80’s and 90’s with Twice Told Coffee Shop and Twice Told Books; two places that were creative hubs for artists\, poets\, musicians\, and anyone looking to expand their creative horizons in a time before the internet when coffee houses and bookstores were performance spaces\, art galleries\, and collaborative meeting places full of philosophical and societal conversations. Countless musicians\, writers\, and artists in Louisville were shaped by the experiences they had in Harold’s spaces.\n\nSince his retirement 17 years ago\, Harold dove into painting and has still remained a vocal advocate for the importance of books. In this show\, Harold’s abstract paintings evoke the sounds\, feelings\, and emotions one might find in a dimly lit coffee shop while listening to a live Jazz show.\n\nSpeaking personally (Jae Grady\, here)\, Harold introduced me to several writers who influenced me\, not the least of which was the work of Kurt Vonnegut. Twice Told Coffee Shop was where I learned to play as a solo musician and where I had my first art show. Twice Told books expanded my hungry young mind in ways I’ll always be grateful for. I am one of many creatives in Louisville that benefitted from Harold’s vision and insight\, and couldn’t be more thrilled to host a show of his work at my place all these years later.\n\nWe will also have wonderful Free-Jazz music with Musician\, Poet\, and Writer Misha Feigin and Cello player Jon Silpayamanan. Join us for our very first musical guests and the first show in our “Enough Space To Share” Tiny Gallery Series!\n\nRefreshments and good conversation with local creatives will be on the menu as well- so please come by and help us celebrate the work of Harold Maier!\n\nCome start out the new year at a local venue with local musicians! \nFacebook Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/685525380099870/

SUMMARY:Mothership Ensemble @ Decca
DESCRIPTION:Mothership Ensemble Presents the First Concert of its 2013-14 Season at Decca\n\nWHEN: Thursday\, November 21\, 20138:00pm concert\, 7:30 pm doors\nWHERE: Decca Restaurant812 East Market StreetLouisville\, KY 40206\nADMISSION: Free\n\nOn Thursday\, November 21st\, contemporary/avant-garde music collective Mothership Ensemble will present the first concert of their 2013-14 concert season at Decca. The program will feature both newly-composed works and 20th century classics performed by some of the most versatile and enthusiastic players in the Louisville area.\n\nThe centerpiece of the program is Louis Andriessen’s raucous\, 20-minute epic Workers Union (1975)\, written for “any loud-sounding group of instruments.” The composer describes the piece as a political metaphor that features “a combination of individual freedom and severe discipline… it is difficult to play in an ensemble and to remain in step\, sort of like organizing and carrying on political action.”\n\nMothership will also present the world premiere of Louisville composer Chris Kincaid’s sensuous and atmospheric Full Sunlight\, written for bass flute\, viola\, cello\, and electronic sounds. The work is inspired by the poem “Full Sunlight” written by Louisville-born poet Conyer Clayton. Kincaid was interested in how “much of the poem is portrayed as a still shot\, a moment in time that is filled with so much. The music is not exactly frozen in time\, but instead takes place in time that slowed almost to a standstill.”\n\nEnsemble director and cellist Jon Silpayamanant will perform in almost every work on the program\, including two pieces written specifically for him by Louisville-based composer Rylee Short. Mayaplis\, for solo cello and electronics\, depicts the immersive\, electrifying\, and overwhelming experiences of being in a large city. Short’s Lucid Themes\, originally written for multimedia duo Camera Lucida\, features gorgeous video projections by artist Roxell Karr in a lively duet with Silpayamanant.\n\nProgram:\n“Mandala” (1996) – Jeffrey RadcliffeTwo Instruments (1958) – Morton Feldman“Mayaplis” (for solo cello and pedals\, 2012) – Rylee Short“The Great Train Race” (for Solo Flute) – Ian ClarkeTwo duets for Bassoon and Cello – Edison Vassilievich Denisov\n—break—\n“Shengshi zisheng tu” 盛世滋生圖 (for Chinese erhu\, electronics\, video\, 2013) – Jon SilpayamanantImprovisation – Jackie Royce\, Jon Silpayamanant“Lucid Themes” (for cello\, dancer\, electronics\, interactive video\, 2013) – Rylee Short“Worker’s Union” (1975) – Louis Andriessen
