From Dream till Dusk (2023)

Categories: , ,

Première: May 14, 2023. Manchester Symphony Orchestra, Cordier Auditorium, North Manchester, Indiana. Debra Lynn, conductor.

Program Notes:

“The opening to From Dream Till Dusk opens with two pairs of duets played by the solo winds and horn. The idea was to create a semi-improvisatory mood that evokes opening taksims, or improvisations, used in art and popular music throughout the Islamicate world. Interestingly, the Turkish cellist Mesut Cemil introduced the idea of taksims over a drone and group improvisations to Turkish classical music which has been adopted globally in these kinds of ensembles. After the opening we hear the main ostinato pattern in the vibraphone, harp, and timpani that’s based on a composition I wrote for Louisville Ballet dancer and choreographer Ashley Kern several years ago. The lush string instrumentation is a callback to some of my favorite Algerian Rai songs, especially those found in some of Cheb Kaled’s recordings, but also in string playing of Malaysian Zapin dance tunes that I often perform with my Pan-Asian Ensemble, Saw Peep. After the brief fugue the main melodic material returns incorporating the solo winds and horn in a more integrated role with the string harmonies. The piece comes to a quiet end first with the melodic instruments dropping out while the ostinato section continues alone fading out like distant heartbeats.”
