Program Notes
Homrong is the Thai word for “Overture” or “Prelude” and Isaan is the name of the region overlapping Laos and Northeast Thailand where I was born. Homrong Isaan is a piece that fuses Western and Thai composition techniques. It is in three parts with each part reflecting a different genre or regional style. The opening is influenced by Luk Thung and Luk Krung, two genres of Thai popular music that my family listened to at home while I grew up here in the states. The middle section borrows sounds and mimics instrumentation from the Thai classical Piphat ensemble. The marimba mimics the the sound and role of the Thai Ranad Ek, the Oboe models the quadruple reeded Pi Nai, while the Flute plays the role of the Thai bamboo flute, Khlui. The last section is in the style of Mor Lam, a folk music genre in the Isaan region of Northeast Thailand and Laos. The opening chord clusters are a technique used by the Khaen, a type of bamboo mouth organ, which displays all the notes of the scale being played. The final section continues in a relentless gallop often heard in solo Phin (plucked lute) repertoire to end the piece.
