Jon Silpayamanant is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary artist currently working in Asian and Asian-American related genres and styles. Most recently his work has focused on Nang Pramothai (หนังประโมทัย) shadow puppetry from his region of birth in the Isaan region of Thailand which he combines in collaboration with his Pan-Asian music ensemble, Saw Peep, and his interactive video and music project, Camera Lucida.
Silpayamanant’s 2D, 3D, Video, and Sound/Art installations have been shown at the Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) as part of the International Žižek Studies Conference; the Commonwealth Gallery and The Project Lodge in Madison, WI; the Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany, IN; the Vilnius Academy of Arts in Vilnius, Lithuania; the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center in St. Louis, MO; The Marcus Lindsey, OPEN Gallery, Woodbine Chamber, and other venues in Louisville, KY; Sorbus Gallery in Helsinki, Finland; and at the Animamus Art Salon and Culture Fix in New York City amongst others.
As a performance artist, Silpayamanant was the first artist-in-residence at the Art loft in Indianapolis, and has done solo and collaborative performances at the Emison Art Center and Peeler Art Center (DePauw University); at the Penn State Scanticon as part of Performance Art, Culture, Pedagogy and the Performative Sites: Intersecting Art, Technology and the Body Symposia; at OPEN Gallery in Louisville; at the Chello Shed in Greencastle; and a number of other non-art specific venues.
